Blond she-devil

Posted by Elena on Monday, June 13, 2011, In : Behavior

I spent 2 hours chasing Lolly around trying to take her picture. I swear when I press the button she is looking at the camera posing, but at the last second she moves and the shutter lag leaves me with some funny looking pictures. I end up with photographs of what looks like fluffy white clouds or pictures of her bushy tail. It's definitely time for a more sophisticated camera. Camera fairy, take notice.

I gave up and took some pics while she was sleeping.

Fun Saturday

Posted by Elena on Monday, June 13, 2011, In : Behavior
Today was a lot of fun. We went to The Greenwich Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show to take a look at the dogs and the competition and see if Ari would like to participate in a DFZ (doggie fun zone) - a challenge course where a dog chases a lure through some agility pieces and obstacles. No prior experience was required. Before the real run Ari and I walked the course - he had to figure out how to navigate a few tunnels, hurdles, hoops and a ramp. After we more or less walked through the course t...

African lion hound Vs mountain lion?

Posted by Elena on Monday, June 13, 2011, In : Behavior
I think owning an African lion hound is starting to pay off. My colleague just told me that her daughter brought home a flyer from school alerting them that a mountain lion was spotted in a neighboring town. I googled it and here it is: "Authorities believe a large cat that has been spotted around the town of Greenwich, Connecticut, is a mountain lion that either escaped or was released from captivity. The cat was last spotted on the campus of the Brunswick School in the King Street area of G...

The Big Dog... And even a Bigger One.

Posted by Eugene on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, In : Behavior
A lot of muscle with very little fat is a good combination to have when you find yourself on a dog playground, full of young male canines trying to establish dominance.  At 82 lean pounds, Ari has been one of the largest inhabitants of this playground, able to match in size and power most of the dogs there. Even Sisco (another Rhodesian, 14 months and well over 90 lbs), although clearly more mature then Ari, is not THAT MUCH bigger.

Yes, being The Big  Dog indeed has its advantages. Until, of...

Puppy Playtime

Posted by Elena on Friday, May 20, 2011, In : Behavior

It rained all day yesterday and it poured today. According to the weather channel there is 80% chance of rain tomorrow and for foreseeable future. So when raining cats and dogs suddenly turned into a pleasant drizzle Ari got himself a trip to a dog park. I was surprised that not all local dogs were there, letting off their steam. Besides Ari there were only 2 other dogs: a 2 year old Golden Retriever and a puppy Bulldog. Despite the size difference, the Golden Retriever and the Bulldog were h...

Size does matter

Posted by Elena on Friday, May 13, 2011, In : Behavior
On Saturday we took Ari to a birthday party picnic at the park. It's a nice yearly tradition and this year it was a small gathering of about 1000000 close friends and relatives.
I thought Ari was very well behaved. Most older kids wanted to play with him, and even though one little boy kept throwing his toys at him and took his Kong, Ari was remarkably calm.
He discovered a cheesecake covered fork under a table and turned into a contortionist squeezing his upper half under a bench with his bu...

Learning new things.. and proud of it!

Posted by Eugene on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, In : Behavior

Dogs try to make their humans proud in many different ways. Learning new tricks, keeping the mailman away, chasing a rabbit from the backyard, or chasing visiting grandma from the family sofa.  But there is one accomplishment that male puppies and their humans are especially proud of.  This is the thing that makes us go “Yes! This is the way to do it!”  It is, of course, lifting a leg when doing their boy business.  Ari learned this vital skill last week, and it filled him (and me, I must...
